FAQ about the German citizenship test
How does the German citizenship test work?
You answer 33 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes: 30 general questions and 3 about your federal state. You pass with at least 17 correct answers.
Where do the questions on this site come from?
From the public question catalogue for the “Leben in Deutschland” test published by BAMF. Explanations, translations and the glossary are Road to Germany’s own study materials. Road to Germany is an independent learning service, not a government app.
Where do I register for the test?
At a test centre approved by BAMF, for example an adult education centre (Volkshochschule). You can find course providers with the BAMF-NAvI course search. The fee is currently 25 euros.
Does everyone have to take the test?
Usually yes. People with a German school-leaving qualification are often exempt. Your naturalization authority makes the binding decision.
Is the test in English?
No. In the test, all questions are asked in German only. That is why Road to Germany always shows the German original next to the English translation.
What if I fail?
You can retake the test as often as you need. Before you do, practice the questions you still get wrong.
Is Road to Germany free?
Yes. Practice, the exam simulation and all questions with answers are free. An optional one-time purchase in the app removes ads.
